Ukraine says an explosion along the main pipeline that carries Russian natural gas across its soil to Europe is being treated as an “act of terrorism.”

The explosion occurred just a day after Russia halted gas shipments to Ukraine in a dispute over payments.

The BBC says:

“The blast took place at the pipeline, which is also known as the Trans-Siberian Pipeline, in Poltava province on Tuesday.

“Flames could be seen erupting from the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod Pipeline in central Ukraine. No one was reported injured by the explosion.

“It is not clear what caused the blast. European and Russian companies said gas exports to the EU were not affected.”

The Associated Press says that the blast occurred far away from the fighting in the east where pro-Russian separatists are battling Ukrainian troops for control of key cities.

Reuters quotes Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov as saying that terrorism is just one of several theories about the explosion that are being investigated. “According to local residents, they heard two big bangs just before the explosion which could indicate they were deliberate explosions,” Avakov said.

In a statement, the country’s Energy Ministry notes that “it is not the first attempted terrorist attack on the Ukrainian gas transport system.”

The agency reported that pipeline’s “faucets” are being turned off as fire fighters still can’t put out the flames.

“The explosion occurred at about 14:45 local time in a field. Due to the flame and the high temperatures, it is impossible to get closer to the epicenter,” Russia Today reported, citing a statement from to local police press-service.

The “Brotherhood” pipeline stretches 4,451km and cuts through Ukraine and runs into Slovakia, where it diverges in two directions; with one part supplying gas to the Czech Republic, Germany, France and Switzerland, and the other to Austria, Italy, Hungary and several countries in the Balkans.

Russia cuts off gas for Ukraine, the next day a transit pipeline explodes.

As they say in Ukraine “що не з’їм то понадкусую”

“What I cannot eat, at least I will take a bite out of”

I should say “as we say in Ukraine”, since I was born in Kyiv, but just beginning to be even more ashamed of being Ukrainian following recent events.

Fine with the pipeline and all the russian b s but at least don’t bomb your own citizens in the east.

Galvanic corrosion on pipelines can be a real problem. Gazprom should take better care of its pipeline systems or they could be sued.

Where is Barness Ashton when you need her?. She is so effective at all things diplomatic they send her where ever they need an impact. So far her record is all bad unfortunately, plenty of impacts but none that are of any benefit to mankind.
She is such a useless wet blanket though that simply throwing her on to the flames might just be sufficient to put out the fire, and if not well…that is one less useless EU commissioner to worry about.
Anyone seen anything of Barroso since he was last spotted holding hands with Van Rompuy at the G7 jolly?

Does anyone even know why they were there?

Once again the UK/US/EUs hatred of anything Russian is allowing their collective paranoia to cloud their judgment when it comes to Ukraine… What sort of idiotic governments hands billions to a bankrupt country, who have already defaulted on their contractual obligations to pay for their subsidised gas and oil, then stands by and does nothing whilst that very same country openly threatens to damage crucial pipelines, or states that it will ‘steal’ the gas and oil intended, and paid, for by the very countries that are supporting it financially and militarily?. And the Ukraine government has the nerve to call the pro Russian separatists ‘terrorists’, you just could not make it up. Cameron, Hague and Odrama need their collective heads banging together..

I’d say it’s more of a hate for Putin.. why would that be?
      I think this article explains
“The Khodorkovsky arrest followed an unpublicized meeting earlier that year on July 14, 2003, between Khodorkovsky and Cheney. Following the Cheney meeting, Khodorkovsky began talks with ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco, Rice’sold firm, about taking a major state in Yukos, said to have been between 25% and 40%.
“That was intended to give Khodorkovsky de facto immunity from possible Putin government interference by tying Yukos to the big US oil giants and, hence, to Washington. It would also have given Washington, via the US oil giants, a de facto veto power over future Russian oil and gas pipelines and oil deals. Days before his October 2003 arrest on tax fraud charges, Khodorkovsky had entertained George H W Bush, the representative of the powerful and secretive Washington Carlyle Group in Moscow. They were discussing the final details of the US oil company share buy-in of Yukos.

Yukos had also just made a bid to acquire rival Sibneft from Boris Berezovsky, another Yeltsin-era oligarch. YukosSibneft, with 19.5 billion barrels of oil and gas, would then own the second-largest oil and gas reserves in the world after ExxonMobil. YukosSibneft would be the fourth-largest in the world in terms of production, pumping 2.3 million barrels of crude oil a day. The Exxon or Chevron buy-up of YukosSibneft would have been a literal energy coup d’etat. Cheney knew it; Bush knew it; Khodorkovsky knew it.

Above all, Putin knew it and moved decisively to block it.”

Quite, he made the threat to galvanise his power base. However, if this carries on, Europe is going to be very cold this winter and energy bills will double. Amerika better put its money where its mouth is and pay the Russians so Ukraine can have few cans of gas.

Nah, US special forces are too heavy, they`d require choppers and they`d be spotted by Ukraine and Russian radar and satellites. This is a one or two man job going in using flying suits from a passing BA passenger plane and then a walk out via the Black Sea and a sub home.

Tut tut Hague, willful damage. Look, blowing up this pipeline does not benefit either side. It must be an outside player

PressTV: US leading Iran into Iraqi quagmire, by Finian Cunningham

Very suspicious indeed, it seems the US is trying to lure Iran into the Iraqi conflict, probably as a pretext turn against Iran militarily at some future event. It smells like a trap, like jackals readying for the kill. I hope Iran doesn’t get sucked in, along with Russia.

When The Elite showed its hand, by Jon Rappoport, June 16, 2014

Wow the sheeple are so sedated these days, the “elite shadow group” don’t even bother to hide their agenda anymore. So much for our “Constitutional Rights”, heads of gov’t are not accountable for high crimes and Presidents are only puppets of corrupt regime. It’s no wonder the US behaves like 3rd world rogue warlords.
