We’re just one week away from the largest march demanding action on climate change in history.
The September 21st People’s Climate March will bring hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of New York City to demand a carbon-free, frack-free, renewable energy economy that works for all of us. And Citizen Action of New York will be there.
The latest comprehensive scientific report on climate change found that levels of nearly all the major greenhouse gases reached record highs in 2013. The important threshold of 400 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – the level at which scientists say the worst impacts of climate change become more likely – will probably be crossed in just two years if we continue on the same path.
That’s why today, we’re calling on Governor Cuomo and the chairs of the State Senate and Assembly Energy Committees to create a comprehensive, scientifically sound transition plan to get New York to 100 percent renewable energy.

Tell them that the alternatives – like fracked natural gas – is just more of the same: dangerous, dirty and harmful to our environment and our health.
The plan should explore the technologies, infrastructure and policies needed for New York to transition to a safe, clean, renewable and independent energy supply and to do so in a just and equitable way that benefits all of us.
We know a transition is possible. We just need a roadmap – and a commitment from our leaders – to get us there.
Just last week, the largest-ever study of the health effects of fracking found that people who live near natural gas wells were more than twice as likely to report upper respiratory and skin problems than those farther away.
But not only is fracking a public health risk – it’s one of the most potent contributors to climate change.
To keep global warming below the threshold scientists are calling catastrophic, we need to keep 60 to 80 percent of fossil fuel reserves in the ground.
If we don’t transition to renewable energy now and stop fracking, we’ll blow right past that limit.
