YAY! New York just banned fracking! *\o/*

Maddie-

Ordinary people across New York built a movement to stand up to fossil fuel companies willing to destroy our communities in the name of profit.

The companies spent millions to influence the political process, but after years of relentless organizing, yesterday we won big. State leaders stood on the side of science and public health by banning fracking. This is amazing news, and it happened because of activists like you who wouldn’t back down!

But the work that got us here can’t stop.

Even without fracking in New York, levels of nearly all the major greenhouse gases continue to reach record highs. We need a plan that makes New York a national leader in building renewable energy infrastructure, and only our state leaders can get us there.

Click here to call on Governor Cuomo and the State Senate and Assembly Energy Committees to create a comprehensive, scientifically sound transition plan to get New York to 100 percent renewable energy.

On the same day the decision to ban hydrofracking statewide was announced, the Long Island Power Authority abandoned its plan to construct a major offshore wind farm and will delay the construction of a large amount of the solar infrastructure it promised.1

Projects like these wouldn’t just reduce dangerous greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change to spiral out of control. They would create good, living wage jobs that New Yorkers need right now.

Without a strong commitment to green infrastructure and a comprehensive plan for moving forward, LIPA and other energy providers can continue to sideline these vital projects.

We don’t have any more time to wait.

Right now we’re on a path that will raise temperatures globally by 3 to 4 degrees celsius. This is the point at which sea-level rise, out of control weather and loss of habitable land will devastate our communities.2

This has been a big year in the fight for environmental justice. 400,000 people marched through the streets of New York in September calling for climate action. We won a statewide ban on hydrofracking. And world leaders at the climate summit in Peru this week showed that they’re beginning to hear our voices.

But we need immediate action. Call on Governor Cuomo and state leaders to create a transition plan that gets New York to 100 percent renewable energy before it’s too late.

Thanks for all that you do,
