TELL CONGRESS: SHUT DOWN BACKDOOR SURVEILLANCE!

Our fears are confirmed – surveillance hawks are using the tragedy at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando to call for expanded surveillance. [1] The good news is that the amendment that would defund useless, but harmful surveillance is getting a floor vote right now because of the calls you made yesterday! And, it has a really good chance of passing the House, hence their fighting back!

Their story on national security is so incredibly dangerous and divisive, we need to knock it down right now. And, we only have until tomorrow.

We have to pass the Massie-Lofgren amendment now. Everyone, please email your representatives right now, click here.

As we speak, the amendment that would defund one of the largest parts of government’s warrantless surveillance programs is being debated on the floor of the House, but leadership in Congress are exploiting the worst U.S. mass-shooting in recent history to expand surveillance powers while weakening important security and privacy rights. No surveillance reform will stop authorities from getting anyone’s information, as long as they get a warrant first. [2]

Surveillance reform has broad support – The House of Representatives has twice before passed this amendment, known as Massie-Lofgren, and last year also passed an amendment to similarly stop the FBI from undermining encryption. However, leadership has quietly removed these important privacy victories from the spending bills it has sent to the President each time.

Our security and freedoms depend on stopping mass surveillance and encryption backdoors, we can’t let them get away with this.

Contact your representative now and tell them they must let the Massie-Lofgren Amendment to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2016 have a vote.

We’re learning how the US government has turned the Internet into a surveillance tool on everyone in the world. They’ve grown the breadth and profit of the intelligence industry without showing that this data collection is actually useful for national security. So, let’s lay this out.

  • Mass surveillance doesn’t work as well as old fashioned investigation. Lone wolves, by their nature, would not be detected by technology designed to detect networks. Additionally, it’s been shown that too much data can actually take away focus from the important facts in a case.
  • When law enforcement via mass surveillance fails, we see attacks like the Pulse Nightclub shooting, the attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado, and the Church shooting in Charleston, among many. All lone wolves, all slipped past the FBI despite their openly hateful ideologies.
  • After the failure of law enforcement to stop these atrocities, the FBI and hawkish politicians try to deflect by calling for more power and saying some version of, “This isn’t our fault, that’s why we need more surveillance.” They then get more funding, without adjusting their investigative techniques, and…
  • We’re back to the top of the list again.

To break that cycle, help us pass the Massie-Lofgren Amendment.  We only have until tomorrow. Please click here to send them an email now.

Luckily, some lawmakers are pushing back. A small group of privacy-minded lawmakers in the House have put forth the “Massie-Lofgren amendment” to the Defense Appropriations bill that would stop the NSA from mandating encryption backdoors and defund Section 702 of the FISA Act, which allows intelligence agencies to collect and analyze information that passes through the internet.

With the surveillance hawks fighting to stop Section 702 from expiring next year [3], it’s critical that we demand that Congress secures this privacy victory now. Everything you do now will move us closer to full reform of these surveillance programs in the coming years.

We can do it. Please contact your rep now, they need to hear from you.

Thanks for all you do,

Lizzy
