But as I often remark, nearly every place in the world has something great going for it… some unique competitive advantages that set it apart from its peers, balanced against a multitude of disadvantages. Iran is a great example; it suffers from long-term economic decay, constant sanctions, and an authoritarian government. Its disadvantages are numerous. But at the same time the country is an archaeological dream, full of well-preserved ruins from civilizations so old that they were studied by ancient Greek scholars. This is a unique advantage. And for a few people, that sole advantage may outweigh Iran’s numerous disadvantages. After all, everyone has his/her own particular set of priorities. Another example: earlier this year when my wife and I were planning out the birth of our child, we chose to have the baby in Mexico. It was a deliberate decision made after careful consideration of our priorities. We wanted extremely high quality and personalized care from physicians, midwives, etc. who would be available to us around the clock. And I didn’t want COVID restrictions factoring into the birth at all. I wasn’t going to risk being in a place where local rules or hospital policy would have forced my wife to wear a mask during labor… or to keep me out of the delivery room. We very rationally laid out our priorities. And after some research and investigation, we landed on Cancun. For us, it was an incredible decision. Cancun, and Mexico in general, are far from perfect; there are certainly plenty of disadvantages. But for my particular priorities at that moment in time, it was absolutely the right place for me. And that leads me to Sweden. There are plenty of disadvantages. High taxes. High cost of living. Cold weather and lack of sunshine. But for some people those problems might be outweighed by Sweden’s long-standing COVID freedom. To this day there are still countless cities, towns, states, and provinces around the world that continue to restrict freedom. They’ve created first and second class citizenships based solely on someone’s vaccine status. It doesn’t matter if an individual has a severe medical condition– like an autoimmune disorder, for which the FDA itself states, “no data are currently available on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for people with autoimmune conditions.” Yet if someone, under advice of their physician, chooses to delay being vaccinated until more data is available for their particular condition, they can be denied basic freedoms, including being a functioning member of society, or potentially having a job. On the other hand, a registered sex offender with a bad case of tuberculosis is welcome with open arms. Politicians and policymakers have also waffled on mask mandates, school openings, and more. Sweden has famously taken a completely different approach during the pandemic– one that they have been constantly derided for in the woke media. But Sweden’s generally light touch with COVID has proven to be quite effective; they did not suffer the economic devastation. And more importantly they did not suffer the mental health devastation. Sweden has not dehumanized its population… nor cultivated a mentality where people view others as filthy, disease-infested vermin rather than friends and neighbors. And yet their COVID track record is just as good, if not better, than its peers in North America and Western Europe. Again, Sweden is not without its challenges and silly rules. (Natural News) In a strange turn of events, the Canadian government just placed an order for 293 million additional doses of Wuhan coronavirus vaccine, despite the entire country having a population of just 37 million people.
What is Justin Trudeau up to, you might be asking? Good question. We would like to know the same as it appears that he is gearing up to inject every Canadian citizen and resident with at least eight additional “booster” shots.
According to reports, Moderna, one of the two manufacturers of messenger RNA (mRNA) injections, has signed a contract with Canada to supply 20 million doses of its experimental jab annually for the years 2022, 2023 and 2024. This amounts to 60 million doses over the next several years with the option to throw in an additional 15 million doses if needed.
“Not a bad deal for your first product ever to market – and a drug that’s still in clinical trials to boot,” writes Celeste McGovern, reporter for LifeSite News, linking to the clinical trials website with more details. “Especially since Moderna has some problems with the safety of its novel platform mRNA vaccine.”
A mere three months after its initial launch, the Moderna injection has received more than 300,000 reports of side effects, many of them serious. This figure is far higher than what has been officially reported to the government in accordance with the law.
All in all, Canada will have eventually received 105 million doses of Moderna’s Chinese Virus injection by 2024, suggesting that covid booster shots will become a seasonal thing much like annual flu shots.
As you may recall from a few months back, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pushed back against a suggestion from Pfizer that “fully vaccinated” people get booster shots. Just a few weeks later, the FDA changed its mind and rushed out an emergency use authorization (EUA) contract allowing Pfizer to dole out boosters starting in September.
FDA pretends to not support covid “booster” shots only to rush them through at warp speed
It turns out that the FDA’s initial refusal was just for show. As far back as April, Canada had already secured some 35 million Pfizer booster shots for the years 2022 and 2023, which came with the option to add another 60 million doses in 2024.
“That’s 188 million Pfizer shots,” McGovern writes.
“Added to Moderna’s supply that’s 293 million vaccine doses – enough injections to shoot every Canadian nearly eight times over in just three years. Do you think they might have a few booster shots a year in mind? Or are the extras for Canadian cats, perhaps?”
Canada’s chief public health officer Theresa Tam pulled a similar stunt as the FDA, pretending to oppose booster shots for covid only to change her tune just two weeks later, perfectly on schedule.
Now, boosters are becoming part of the plandemic lexicon, and will likely become a routine part of staying “fully vaccinated” against the Fauci Flu. Is anyone really surprised about this?
“No one seems to be asking why the miracle vaccine needs a booster dose or why, since every vaccination bar ever presented and then raised again – has been passed in Canada – and 99% of long-term care residents are vaccinated, why are heavily vaccinated Canadians – and Israelis and Brits and others –locked down in a ‘4th wave’ of COVID cases?” McGovern asks.

Nasdaq-listed Moderna confirmed receiving “several complaints of particulate matter” in vaccine vials distributed in Japan but said it had found “no safety or efficacy issues” related to these reports.
You read that correctly. There’s some sort of magnetic, possibly metallic contamination in the vaccines, but the vaccine manufacturer claims there are “no safety or efficacy issues.”
What else are they going to say? That the vaccines are dosed up with graphene oxide which responds to magnets and external electromagnetic fields? That would give away the whole agenda if such a truth were acknowledged.
The message to Japanese health officials is clear: Stop looking at the vials! Just inject your people and do as you’re told!
BBC journalist List Shaw confirmed to have been killed by vaccine-induced clotting in the brain
We always knew that journalists who have been pimping for the vaccine industry would begin to be killed by those very same vaccines. It makes you wonder how anyone can even call themselves a “journalist” if they aren’t willing to ask questions of the vaccine establishment. By definition, you’re not really a journalist if you express blind faith in the very institutions you’re supposed to be keeping in check. In the UK, BBC journalist Lisa Shaw is now confirmed to have been killed by blood clots caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine, confirms The Guardian (UK):
An award-winning BBC radio presenter died as a result of complications from the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, a coroner has concluded.
Lisa Shaw, who worked for BBC Radio Newcastle, died at the city’s Royal Victoria Infirmary in May, a little more than three weeks after her first dose of the vaccine developed by academics at the University of Oxford.
The inquest heard that Shaw, 44, had been admitted to hospital after doctors investigating her complaints of headaches found she had suffered a brain haemorrhage.
The reason people suffer headaches after taking these “clot shots” is because blood clots block the brain blood vessels that normally supply blood to the brain. Since the heart is still pumping, pressure builds up behind the blood clot. In some people, this results in a “blowout” of the blood vessel, or a “blood brain bleed” / brain hemorrhage. As The Guardian reports, “She was transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where she received a number of treatments, including cutting away part of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain, but despite those efforts she died on 21 May.”
I’m quite certain that “cutting away part of your skull” was never mentioned to Shaw as a possible side effects of taking the vaccine. How many vaccine recipients have undergone emergency brain surgery around the world? These reports are shockingly common, and it’s obvious why: The “clot shot” causes blood clots that block blood supply to the brain, heart, skin and other organs. This is also why covid vaccine shots are causing skin to die and rot off the faces and bodies of some people. This condition, also known as “whole body skin peeling,” is often misdiagnosed as a burn, so many of the vaccine victims whose skin is “rotting” off are never recorded as vaccine injuries.

Some journalists who are not yet dead but injured by the vaccine somehow remain wholly brainwashed to keep pushing the vax propaganda. Yahoo Australia reports on a pro-vaccine journalist who obviously was almost killed by the vaccine, yet still somehow believes doctors when they tell him they hope his intense pain will fade away on its own. “Nearing the end of the second week my heart started to race, I was getting pins and needles in the arms, extreme fatigue and a very strange sensation of dizziness,” he wrote.
“I took Nurofen, and I kept working.”
By the end of the third week after his vaccination though, Mr Hitchcock said he had gotten “steadily worse”.
“Sharp chest pain — cold shivers and chills — and the dizziness was intense,” he said.
“25 days after the shot and probably a little late to hospital — but here I am — diagnosed with pericarditis — or inflammation of the heart due to the Pfizer vaccine.”
… it’s going to take some time getting used to the constant pain – which they hope will eventually go away.
What’s interesting in all this is how there even appears to be self-censorship by this journalist, who appears to be a victim of Stockholm Syndrome where he remains loyal to the very people who are trying to kill him. That last sentence, “it’s going to take some time getting used to the constant pain – which they hope will eventually go away,” appears to have been removed from his Instagram post. Perhaps he was threatened with being fired if he admitted the vaccine is causing “constant pain.”

What’s worth noting in all this is that vaccine deaths and injuries among journalists, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, bureaucrats and others who pushed vaccines are going to skyrocket over the next few months. With fully-vaccinated people now 13 times more likely to be injured, hospitalized or killed by the “Delta” variant compared to those with natural immunity, it’s not difficult to do the math on all this: The coming wave of deaths will be among the vaccinated themselves, many of whom were also propagandists for the vaccine industry (Karma sure is a bitch.)
This doesn’t even consider the Antibody Dependent Enhancement effect that many health experts predict will kick in during the coming winter flu season. (Natural News) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced its approval for a Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) “vaccine,” which will now be marketed under the name “Comirnaty.” This is not the same as the Pfizer vaccine, which the media is widely reporting as having received “full approval.” See full details in this story.
All individuals 16 years of age and older now qualify for injection with the experimental jab from Pfizer-BioNTech, which contains mRNA gene therapy chemicals that do not prevent disease – this means it is not a true vaccine – but rather helps to minimize symptoms, supposedly.
The agency has also indicated that the Pfizer injection “continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.”
A letter from the FDA explains that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued U.S. License No. 2229 to BioNTech, a German pharmaceutical giant, to manufacture and sell its Comirnaty injections in the United States with agency approval. Comirnaty injections are not yet being manufactured or produced in the United States.
“Under this license, you are authorized to manufacture the product, COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA, which is indicated for active immunization to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in individuals 16 years of age and older,” the letter goes on to explain.
The released package insert for the drug explains that each dose contains 30 micrograms (mcg) of “a nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the viral spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2.” Each injection vial also contains the following ingredients:

The newly released package insert further explains that the nucleoside-modified mRNA in Comirnaty is formulated in lipid particles, “which enable delivery of the mRNA into host cells to allow expression of the SARS-CoV-2 S antigen.”
“The vaccine elicits an immune response to the S antigen, which protects against COVID-19,” the company further claims.
It is important to keep in mind that the injection has not yet even entered Stage 3 trials, despite its approval and despite the fact that it has already been administered more than 200 million times.
Meanwhile, as increasingly more injections have been administered, new “cases” of covid are skyrocketing. Cases of Chinese Germs are reportedly up more than 600 percent since July 1, which is when the government really started aggressively pushing the jabs.
Beginning on September 20, the federal government is planning to unleash a third dose of both the Pfizer and Moderna injections.
“If vaccines are fully authorized, that would take that excuse [for not getting vaccinated] off the table,” chided William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“If fully licensed,” he added, “I think that movement of [vaccine] mandates would accelerate and generate lots of vaccinations.”
With full approval, vaccine manufacturers can also market their shots directly to consumers – meaning television commercials and billboards will be littered with ads for the “Operation Warp Speed” abominations.
“Reading the FDA letter dated Aug. 23, 2021, it is a full approval, but continues under an extension to the EUA Emergency Use Authorization,” noted one commenter at the DailyMail Online. “Sounds like a legal fudge to me.”
“How can it be approved when it doesn’t prevent covid?” asked another. “They aren’t giving us the full story.”
“Trusting a company that has been fined millions of dollars with your health is like trusting Jeffrey Epstein around your children,” wrote another. “Pfizer’s criminal history raises a huge red flag in my eyes. No company with good intentions gets fined 2.3 billion dollars for no good reason.”

(Natural News) There appears to be a whole lot of confusion out there about which “vaccine” for the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) was actually “approved” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Aug. 23, 2021.
While many mainstream media outlets quickly ran with the story that Pfizer’s existing mRNA injection for the Fauci Flu was given the official green light from the FDA, supposedly making it easier to mandate, others are saying that the FDA issued approval specifically to BioNTech, a German vaccine corporation, for a Chinese Virus injection that does not exist yet.
BioNTech, as you may recall, partnered with Pfizer to produce the current Fauci Flu shot that is being administered under an emergency use authorization (EUA). It turns out, however, that this is technically a different shot than the “Comirnaty” branded one referenced in the FDA’s recent approval announcement.
It would seem as though there is a mass mind control con taking place right now in which the usual suspects are peddling a confusing, if not false, narrative that the current Pfizer injection has received “full approval” from the FDA. So, what is the actual truth?
According to Dr. Robert Malone, the inventor of messenger RNA technology, the official FDA documents do not indicate, based on his own reading, that full approval for the Pfizer injection currently in use has arrived. So are the Pfizer jabs really “approved,” or are they not?
In case you are unfamiliar with Dr. Malone, he recently blew the lid on the dangers of administering mRNA injections in the middle of a pandemic, fearing that he might be assassinated for coming forward with this information at a time when the government and media are aggressively pushing the shots as the final solution.
Now, Dr. Malone is taking issue with the government and media’s latest claim that the Pfizer shot has been fully approved by the FDA when that may not actually be the case based on the wording of the approval.
On the flip side, Pfizer’s own labeling suggests that its current jab authorized under EUA is the same as Comirnaty, and that the two are basically interchangeable.
“The FDA-approved COMIRNATY (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) and the EUA-authorized Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine have the same formulation and can be used interchangeably to provide the COVID-19 vaccination series,” the Pfizer document states.
At this point, it is uncertain exactly what is going on, but we wanted to bring this conflicting information to your attention. By all appearances, it would seem as though the medical fascists are trying yet again to pull a fast one on the masses in order to justify “mandatory” vaccination schemes designed to enslave the world under Big Pharma rule.
An FDA release on August 23 further suggests that the agency considers Comirnaty and the current Pfizer injection being administered to be one and the same, and that the name is merely changing because the drug has received full approval.
“The vaccine has been known as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, and will now be marketed as Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older,” the agency says, seemingly supporting what the media is claiming about the approval.
“The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.”

Lockdowns make people sick, but Australia continues to abuse people
Lockdowns put many people in a state of fight or flight, as their careers and livelihoods are threatened. Lockdowns put more stress on people who are trying to make ends meet, limiting their opportunities and ability to interact. As rights are stripped, people are threatened to comply with bodily demands at every turn, raising blood pressure, increasing stress hormones. Grieving people need other people there for them; isolation can kill. Children and adolescents need human interaction; a lack of friendship and stability can cause depression and anxiety which can lead to suicide. All these government-generated problems break down the psychology of people and weaken their ability to adapt to the world around them. In this tyrannical environment of suppression, people get sicker in the mind and in the body.
Australia continues to set new daily records for infection, despite adhering to strict, ongoing lockdowns. From Victoria and Queensland, to New South Whales and Greater Brisbane, to South and Western Australia and the Greater Sydney region, Australia is locking people in their homes, restricting human interaction and isolating people like never before. But the nation is getting sicker and hospitalizations continue to climb. Australia beat its daily record with 914 recorded infections, and the curve never seems to flatten. The lockdowns have not worked since the beginning, and infections spike as soon as the tyranny is enacted, but governments continue on the same path, never learning, never relinquishing their ill-gotten power. In fact, Victoria is on its sixth lock down and hundreds of thousands of people are in revolt.
Vaccines cannot protect against the problems caused by vaccines, the medical system and the government
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has considered an end to the lockdowns but told the media that cannot happen until 70 percent of the population is fully vaccinated. What does it mean to be “fully vaccinated” anyway? Coronavirus vaccine programs continue to fail across the world and new boosters are now being forced onto people who were already considered protected.
“You can’t live with lockdowns forever and at some point, you need to make that gear change, and that is done at 70%,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a television interview on the Australian Broadcasting Corp’s Insider program. Morrison believes that the rights of people are actually privileges granted by the government. In this way, the population can be subjugated into perpetuity. The Australians are beginning to learn that their rights are inherent, sovereign, that they come from God and are enforced through noncompliance and faith.
The level of coercion being used to force vaccinate people in Australia is inhumane; as it has been around the world. The world cannot be sterilized from respiratory infections, especially when the vaccines shed spike proteins and cause new mutations to manifest.
There will be no eradication of COVID because the source of transfection continues to be injected into people, weakening the population and killing off a certain percentage. Vaccines do not protect against medical error. Vaccines do not protect people against ventilator-associated pneumonia and lung damage caused by the machines. Vaccines do not help anyone lose weight, improve respiratory function or increase nutrition uptake in the cells. Vaccines do not protect against hospital-acquired super-bug infections and the failure of antibiotics. Vaccines do not protect people against the immune suppressant drugs and masks, which only weaken the body and set it up for severe disease. Vaccines do not protect against medical systems that refuse early treatment, and have never been proven to generate durable, long-lasting immunity.
The “science” will not save anyone from COVID because the science of today looks a lot like tyranny and genocide.
As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy setting up this interview. Across the world, there are so many intermediaries, cutouts, and organizations that insist you have to go through them to get to The Man. I made coffee, and we sat across from each other at a small folding table near the chugging air conditioner. He smiled and said, “Lucky you have a website. Nobody would believe you’re talking to me. Nobody would publish this conversation.” And so it began. God, did you make humans to be free? To have freedom? Think it through. You don’t MAKE freedom. Freedom exists. You can only try to take it away. And I didn’t. So if someone says he doesn’t want the COVID vaccine— He’s free to refuse. But he has to pay the price. When the government or a corporation clamps down and mandates the shot, it’s a tough situation. Where do you stand on the vaccine? I can speak with authority on the human immune system. I created it. Vaccination is supposed to be a rehearsal for the real thing, right? The antibodies and the T-cells swing into action and neutralize the protein or the piece of the virus that’s injected. Yes? And? Well, if the rehearsal goes well, then why did you need it in the first place? Are you catching my drift? If the rehearsal is a success, why wouldn’t the real thing be a success without the rehearsal? I hadn’t thought of it that way. Nobody does. Why not? Did you create humans with low IQ? You can’t put that on me. People make themselves and each other smarter or dumber. Again, freedom. Well, yes. If every person’s IQ was 102 forever, it would be a strange world. I take it you’re against the lockdowns. Imprisoning innocent people in their homes? I’m very much against it. The rationale is, “we have to stop the spread of the virus.” I’m very familiar with rationalizations, reasons, and excuses. They tend to hide actual motives. In this situation, what’s the actual motive for the lockdowns? Do you really need me to confirm it? Control. Over populations. But you yourself, when you made the world and everything in it—you were exercising extreme control. Really? Is that what you think? I never changed or corrected what I was doing? I never stopped to consider an alternative? The bible says it all happened in six days. Do you suppose I was sitting somewhere counting? Saying, “All right, that was Tuesday, and now I’m almost in the middle of the week…” You made mistakes? I made changes. A mistake is when an engineer looks at his plans and says, “This won’t work. The bridge will fall down.” I wasn’t building a bridge. I’m an artist. I had an infinity of possibilities before me. I could have gone a trillion different ways. Did you create viruses? Cutting to the chase, eh? All right, let’s get down to it. I made a lot of little particles. Some of them can alter their forms. But in the sense you mean it, no. I didn’t make Rockefeller-type germs, each one of which supposedly causes a so-called specific disease. That’s a human story. A nonsensical fairy tale. I’m not on the hook for that. That’s a business model. So what about SARS-CoV-2? What about it? It’s the kind of shadow people are afraid of. They think, as they’re walking around, that the shadow follows them. And eventually, some pathetic character will say he’s discovered the cause behind the shadow—and it’s the sun. So the sun has to be neutralized. Or blocked off. Or shut down. Or changed. So accusing the sun of causing all the trouble is like saying diseases are really genetic in origin, and in order to cure the diseases we have to re-engineer humans. And meanwhile, a pipe from a factory is leaking into a river, and the river is filled with poison, and the fish are dying, and people who swim in the river and drink the water are getting sick and dying. But to protect the company that owns the factory, scientists say the people have defective genes and that’s the problem. Another business model. Did you make SARS-CoV-2? No. Why would I? Then who made it? Who made the shadows people are afraid of? The press, governments, propagandists. Who made the actual virus? I believe I’ve already answered that question. I want a clear answer on the record. And I want to lead you to give your own answer. What good does it do to make a pronouncement from on high? You’re God. And you’re free. I was afraid we’d get into a pickle over this issue. It isn’t just a pickle, my friend. It’s a whole apocalyptic pastrami sandwich on rye with mustard. The people of Earth have to decide whether they want to destroy themselves or lift themselves up with vital life-force—which, by the way, is the ultimate immune system. You can’t make that decision for us. I could, but then I would just be a super Bill Gates. Freedom means freedom. That’s the ticket. If you buy it, then as they say, you take the ride. You have empathy for us? In my own way, more than you know. Does SARS-CoV-2 exist? Does fear exist? You’re saying both questions are the same? Look, these virologists in their labs—they’re working with soup in a dish, and they’re saying they’ve isolated a virus. They’re not isolating anything. Don’t you think I’ve been in those labs? I have wide, wide experience. I’ve been everywhere. Watching the virologists is like watching a cheap circus act. When it’s over, you want your money back. I have to go now. I have appointments to slap some priests of various religions on the head. They’re taking my name in vain. That’s a lot of priests. It must keep you very busy. It’s similar to doing a spot-check of products coming off the assembly line. Why don’t you just shut down the line? Why don’t I make everything everywhere perfect all at once? Because I’m not running a puppet show. Some people want a puppet show. I’m not Fauci or Klaus Schwab. Then slap those two. Oh I have. But they like it. Sadists often do. If a person was going to be executed…you know, killed; and he could save his life if he answered one question CORRECTLY ON THE BASIS OF ABSOLUTE TRUTH; and the question was, does the SARS-CoV-2 virus exist; and he prayed to you to give him the answer, would you? Yes. What would you tell him? I’d tell him it doesn’t exist. But you would never reveal that to me. Of course not. ~~~
Charlie Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections and used his “day job” to support his enduring love of jazz, has died, according to his publicist. He was 80.
Bernard Doherty said Tuesday that Watts “passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”
“Charlie was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation,” Doherty said.
Watts had announced he would not tour with the Stones in 2021 because of an undefined health issue.
The quiet, elegantly dressed Watts was often ranked with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and a handful of others as a premier rock drummer, respected worldwide for his muscular, swinging style as the Stones rose from their scruffy beginnings to international superstardom. He joined the band early in 1963 and remained over the next 60 years, ranked just behind Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as the group’s longest lasting and most essential member.
Watts stayed on, and largely held himself apart, through the drug abuse, creative clashes, and ego wars that helped kill founding member Brian Jones, drove bassist Bill Wyman and Jones’ replacement Mick Taylor to quit and otherwise made being in the Stones the most exhausting of jobs.
A classic Stones song like “Brown Sugar” and “Start Me Up” often began with a hard guitar riff from Richards, with Watts following closely behind, and Wyman, as the bassist liked to say, “fattening the sound.” Watts’ speed, power, and timekeeping were never better showcased than during the concert documentary, “Shine a Light,” when director Martin Scorsese filmed “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” from where he drummed toward the back of the stage.
The Stones began, Watts said, “as white blokes from England playing Black American music” but quickly evolved their own distinctive sound. Watts was a jazz drummer in his early years and never lost his affinity for the music he first loved, heading his own jazz band and taking on numerous other side projects.
He had his eccentricities — Watts liked to collect cars even though he didn’t drive and would simply sit in them in his garage. But he was a steadying influence on stage and off as the Stones defied all expectations by rocking well into their 70s, decades longer than their old rivals the Beatles.
Watts didn’t care for flashy solos or attention of any kind, but with Wyman and Richards forged some of rock’s deepest grooves on “Honky Tonk Women,” “Brown Sugar” and other songs. The drummer adapted well to everything from the disco of “Miss You” to the jazzy “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and the dreamy ballad “Moonlight Mile.”
Jagger and Richards at times seemed to agree on little else besides their admiration of Watts, both as a man and a musician. Richards called Watts “the key” and often joked that their affinity was so strong that on stage he’d sometimes try to rattle Watts by suddenly changing the beat — only to have Watts change it right back.
He also had an impact on the Rolling Stones that extended beyond drumming. He worked with Jagger on the ever more spectacular stage designs for the group’s tours. He also provided illustrations for the back cover of the acclaimed 1967 album “Between the Buttons” and inadvertently gave the record its title. When he asked Stones manager Andrew Oldham what the album would be called, Oldham responded “Between the buttons,” meaning undecided. Watts thought that “Between the Buttons” was the actual name and included it in his artwork.
To the world, he was a rock star. But Watts often said that the actual experience was draining and unpleasant, and even frightening. “Girls chasing you down the street, screaming…horrible!… I hated it,” he told The Guardian newspaper in an interview. In another interview, he described the drumming life as a “cross between being an athlete and a total nervous wreck.”
Watts found refuge from the rock life, marrying Shirley Ann Shepherd in 1964 and having a daughter, Seraphina, soon after. While other famous rock marriages crumbled, theirs held. Jagger and Richards could only envy their bandmate’s indifference to stardom and relative contentment in his private life, which included happily tending horses on a rural estate in Devon, England.
Author Philip Norman, who has written extensively about the Rolling Stones, said Watts lived “in constant hope of being allowed to catch the next plane home.” On tour, he made a point of drawing each hotel room he stayed in, a way of marking time until he could return to his family. He said little about playing the same songs for more than 40 years as the Stones recycled their classics. But he did branch out far beyond “Satisfaction” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by assembling and performing with jazz bands in the second half of his career.
Charles Robert Watts, son of a lorry driver and a housewife, was born in Neasden, London, on June 2, 1941. From childhood, he was passionate about music — jazz in particular. He fell in love with the drums after hearing Chico Hamilton and taught himself to play by listening to records by Johnny Dodds, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and other jazz giants.
He worked for a London advertising firm after he attended Harrow Art College and played drums in his spare time. London was home to a blues and jazz revival in the early 1960s, with Jagger, Richards and Eric Clapton among the future superstars getting their start. Watts’ career took off after he played with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, for whom Jagger also performed, and was encouraged by Korner to join the Stones.
Watts wasn’t a rock music fan at first and remembered being guided by Richards and Brian Jones as he absorbed blues and rock records, notably the music of bluesman Jimmy Reed. He said the band could trace its roots to a brief period when he had lost his job and shared an apartment with Jagger and Richards because he could live there rent-free.
“Keith Richards taught me rock and roll,” Watts said. “We’d have nothing to do all day and we’d play these records over and over again. I learned to love Muddy Waters. Keith turned me on to how good Elvis Presley was, and I’d always hated Elvis up ’til then.”
Watts was the final man to join the Stones; the band had searched for months to find a permanent drummer and feared Watts was too accomplished for them. Richards recalled the band wanting him so badly to join that members cut down on expenses so they could afford to pay Watts a proper salary. Watts said he believed at first the band would be lucky to last a year.
“Every band I’d ever been in had lasted a week,” he said. “I always thought the Stones would last a week, then a fortnight, and then suddenly, it’s 30 years.”
For much of his career, Watts resisted the excesses of his bandmates, but he fell into heroin addiction in the mid-1980s. He would credit his stable relationship with his wife for getting him off drugs.
“I was warring with myself at that time,” he told Rolling Stone magazine.
With his financial future secure because of the Stones’ status as one of the world’s most popular live bands, Watts was able to indulge his passion for jazz by putting together some of the most talented musicians in Britain for a series of recordings and performances. They typically played during the long breaks between Stones tours.
His first jazz record, the 1986 “Live at Fulham Town Hall,” was recorded by the Charlie Watts Orchestra. Others by the Charlie Watts Quintet followed, and he expanded that group into the Charlie Watts and the Tentet.
Watts was an acclaimed jazz bandleader when he was stricken with throat cancer in 2004. He received extensive treatment and made a full recovery. His return to health allowed him to resume touring with both the Stones and his jazz band.
By then, the young man who had worn his brown hair down to his shoulders in the late 1960s had evolved into a craggy, white-haired, impeccably dressed senior statesman of rock. Getting Watts to talk about his place in rock history was almost impossible, but he seemed to enjoy talking about fashion. It was not unusual to see him attired in a custom-made suit and polka dot tie while his bandmates wore jeans and T-shirts.
In the tumultuous, extremely competitive world of rock and roll, Watts seemed to make few enemies.
“It all seems to boil down to a certain quality which is as rare as hen’s teeth in the music business, but which Charlie Watts is perceived to have in abundance. In a word, decency,” columnist Barbara Ellen wrote after interviewing Watts in 2000. “You’ve got to hand it to a…man who’s played with the world’s most influential rock ‘n’ roll band … and stayed happily married to his wife, Shirley … A man who, moreover, remains resolutely determined not to take his elevated position too seriously.”
