On this day, September 25, 1789, thanks to the unique military talent of the Russian officer, Major General Iosif Mikhailovich Deribas, the Ottoman Hadji-Bay fortress on the shores of the Black Sea was taken by the Russian troops, after a major offensive. **Deribas was of Spanish origin, but having been recruited by Catherine the Great, he spent his life advancing the interests of Russia (original name José de Ribas y Boyons)!

❗️ Just a few years later, in 1793, on the site of the Hadji-Bay fortress, Deribas and the Moscow envoys founded the glorious Russian city of Odessa and the Odessa Port! **Beautifully cobblestoned and treelined, the main pedestrian street of Odessa, in its UNESCO World Heritage center, is called Deribasovskaya, after Deribas.
